Kate Mackintosh is a member of Lennon’s Expert Advisory Group on the proposed Ecocide Prevention Scotland Bill.
Ecocide Law Advisory has played a pivotal role in shaping this historic legislation, offering expert guidance and support to Scottish Labour during the drafting process. Kate Mackintosh is a member of Lennon’s Expert Advisory Group on the proposed Ecocide Prevention Scotland Bill. Our contribution ensures that the bill is not only legally robust but also aligned with international efforts to establish ecocide as a crime.
If the bill passes, Scotland will become the first part of the UK to recognise ecocide as a criminal offense, positioning itself as a global leader in the fight for environmental protection. The proposed legislation aims to prevent acts that cause widespread and long-term harm to ecosystems and introduces penalties for those responsible, with corporate negligence being a key focus.
The bill has already garnered overwhelming public support, with thousands of responses to the consultation phase showing a broad coalition of backing for this important cause. To move forward, the proposal needs the endorsement of at least 18 MSPs. If passed, Scotland will set a bold precedent for implementing ecocide law.
Kate Mackintosh, Executive Director of UCLA Law The Promise Institute Europe and cofounder of Ecocide Law Advisory, said:
"Scotland is emerging as a true pioneer in ecocide law—a role that’s rightly drawing global attention. I’m thrilled that Monica Lennon MSP is taking this forward. With a robust legal framework, we can not only deter and punish the most egregious offences against nature but also safeguard the fundamental human rights that are inextricably linked to a healthy environment."
By advancing this legislation, Scotland demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the environment and human rights, recognizing the undeniable link between a healthy planet and the well-being of its people.
